Peggy Fortnum Artwork & Illustrations

Later Paddington books had felt tip pen illustrations of Paddington on the front of the dustjackets. This illustration was not used.

Living near to the sea Fortnum frequently painted coastal landscapes, as in this example from 1976.

An original Paddington sketch not used in the books.

Publishers routinely retain the original book illustrations for future use and their archives. Fortnum’s original book illustrations are thus not commonly available. She would add illustrations when replying to correspondence. Caution should be taken if purchasing original artwork and any provenance is important. Fakes have been offered for sale on online auction sites. In one example all the illustrations offered featured traced (so inaccurate) copies of the top Google search results. This included a known Paddington illustration that was drawn by another illustrator but had supposedly been initialled ‘P.F.’.
